Using custom Email macros in bulk email templates

These work great for templates used in processes, or as a selected email template in an email from thew Actions Dashboard, however they don't work for bulk email templates. They'll result in the template looking like {MACROS1} in the sent email instead of the result of the macro.

Is there a way to use custom macros in bulk email templates? If not, why don't custom macros work there?
