In the classic email designer, you could add a value to the "Entity settings for campaign signal" and as long as it had a path to the contact, you could use that object as the starting point for your template. Is that possible in the new designer? If so, I can't find where to set that. Or is this an example of where the functionality in the new designer is still behind the older version?

It's not possible in the new designer, which I am completely unhappy about 👎🏻. I have several clients that will remain on the old/classic designer just for that functionality.

As Ryan mentioned, in the new email designer, you cannot directly add a value to "Entity settings for campaign signal" as you could in the classic designer. The new designer only displays macros that exist as records in the CombinedEmailTemplateMacro object. To add a custom macro, you must manually create a new record in this object, specifying the correct column path and position. There is no option to set the starting object for your template in the new designer as was possible in the classic designer, so this functionality is currently behind the older version.
I will register this as an idea for our R&D team to include it in future releases.
