I created a campaign to capture leads and send an email thanking them for signing up. The email address is already in the Lead, and the email application captures the audience from the Lead. Do I need to do any other configuration for the sending to work? Do these leads have to become contacts, necessarily? Is there already something that does this automatically?

There are multiple ways to send e-mails to the registered Leads, but there is no strict requirement for them to be registered as Contacts.
1. You may choose to create a different campaign that adds audience from a folder / matching a filter based on a Lead object:
2. You can create a bulk / trigger email adding audience from Leads:
3. You can also create a business process that reacts to a Lead being added to your system, Read the data from Leads, match it to the added record and use its email to send a message:
By default there is no process converting Leads to Contacts, however, if Leads are gathered from landing pages, you may mark the option "Create contact", which will do that automatically:
